DescriptionThe Multijet direct injection system represents the most technologically advanced Common Rail system capable of carrying out 5 injections per cycle controling the quantity injected and the injection pressure (1350 bar max) independently of the engine rotation speed. The engine management control unit is capable of managing the introduction of small quantities of fuel (pre and post pilot injections) in addition to the main injection (the quantity of fuel injected to provide the performance requested by the driver) depending on the engine speed and load conditions, guaranteeing particularly 'soft' engine operation in all situations. To reduce exhaust emissions, an electrically activated EGR valve which is managed directly by the engine management control unit, a recirculation exhaust gas cooling system and a close coupled catalyzer have been adopted.A fixed geometry turbocharger and intercooler are responsible for the supercharging. Thanks to the electronic management described above, this engine conforms to the latest anti-pollution and continuous control regulations in accordance with the EOBD system (European On Board Diagnosis); this system permits continuous diagnosis of the vehicle components relating to emissions, and indicates to the user, by switching on the relevant warning light and displaying the message on the instrument panel, any deterioration in these components. The system is also controlled by means of special relays located in the engine compartment junction unit. The supply lines to the control unit and the various system components (sensors and actuators) are protected by special fuses, also located in the control unit.
Functional description The engine management control unit M010 receives a direct battery supply, at pin 50 connector B and an ignition-operated supply at pin 23 of the same connector. The control unit sends a negative signal, from pin 80 connector B, to the coil of relay T09, housed inside the engine compartment junction unit B001. The relay, when energized, closes its internal contact, providing a power supply:to EGR solenoid valve L030 (line protected by fuse F11);to the air flow meter K041 (line protected by fuse F11);to the heater plugs control unit M015 (line protected by fuse F11);to the engine management control unit M010, at pin 5 connector A (line protected by fuse F11);to the engine management control unit M010, at pin 5 connector B (line protected by fuse F17);to the engine management control unit M010, at pin 4, 6 connector B (line protected by fuse F22);to the relay T19, inside the engine compartment junction unit B001. The relay T19 is energized by the engine management control unit from pin 76 connector B providing the power supply for the fuel temperature sensor K081. The relay T10 is energized by the engine management control unit from pin 75 connector B providing the power supply for the electric fuel pump N040. The latter has an earth connection via the inertia switch I050. In the case of an impact, the inertia disconnects the electric pump earth, cutting off the supply of fuel. The engine management control unit M010, controls the switching on of the 'engine failure' warning light in the instrument panel E050 from pin 78 connector B. The warning light receives an ignition-operated supply from the actual instrument panel; it is switched on via a negative signal supplied by the engine management control unit. From connector A, the engine management control unit M010:from pin 15 controls the engagement of the EGR solenoid valve L030;from pins 10, 27, 40, 14 is connected to the air flow meter K041;from pins 16, 47 controls injector N070A;from pins 17, 49 controls injector N070B;from pins 31, 48 controls injector N070C;from pins 1, 46 controls injector N070D;from pins 4, 34 is connected to the fuel pressure regulator N077;from pins 8, 6 provides the supply and earth reference, respectively, for the fuel pressure sensor K083;at pin 38 receives the signal from the fuel pressure sensor K083;at pin 9 receives the (earth reference) signal from the engine oil pressure switch K028;at pins 29, 54 receives the signals supplied by the engine coolant temperature sensor/sender unit K036;from pins 25, 21 provides the supply and earth reference, respectively, for timing sensor K047;at pin 56 receives the signal supplied by the timing sensor K047;from pins 43, 59 is connected to the rpm sensor K046;from pins 23, 24 provides the supply and earth reference, respectively, for the supercharging sensor K082;at pin 41 receives the signal supplied by the supercharging sensor K082;From connector B, the engine management control unit M010:from pins 13, 261 provides the supply and earth reference, respectively, for the fuel temperature sensor K081;at pin 90 receives the signal supplied by the diesel filter water presence sensor K031; the sensor receives a power supply from the line protected by fuse F51 inside the junction unit under the dashboard B002 and is connected to the battery earth A001 connector F;at pins 1, 3 it is connected directly to the battery earth A001 connector F;at pins 70, 74 it is connected to the heater plugs control unit M015; the latter receives a direct battery supply from the line protected by fuse F71 (pin 1 connector B). At pin 1 connector A is connected to the battery earth A001 connector F, whilst the heater plugs A040 are controlled from connector C;at pin 93 the signal from the clutch pedal switch I031 is received;from pins 15, 83 the supply is provided for the two resistances inside the accelerator pedal potentiometer K055;from pins 32, 25 the earth reference is supplied for the two resistances inside the accelerator pedal potentiometer K055;at pins 41, 65 the signals supplied by the accelerator pedal potentiometer K055 are received;at pins 68, 92 the normally open (N.A.) and normally closed (N.C.) signals, respectively, supplied by the brake pedal switch I030 are received;from pin 66 it is connected, via the 'W' serial line, to the body computer node M001; the 'W' line is a recovery line which, in the case of a FIAT CODE malfunction, guarantees the operation of the vehicle (for more details see2751627SeeE7010CODE);at pin 88 it is connected to the diagnostic socketSee E8010 DIAGNOSTIC MULTIPLE CONNECTOR ;at pin 79 it sends a negative signal to the relay coil controlling the engagement of the compressor2751614SeeE6021COMPRESSOR ENGAGEMENT; From connector C, the engine management control unit is connected to earth C060.After the engine has started, the varioius sensors used in the supply system are supplied directly from the engine control unit, exchanging with it all the data relating to their operation. The engine management control unit is connected via the CAN:from pins 58, 59 connector B to the B CAN communicating with the body computer node M001 See E1050 CAN CONNECTION LINES ;from pins 40, 64 it is connected to the C CANSee E1050 CAN CONNECTION LINES .Via these two lines, the engine management control unit sends/receives the signals provided by the various sensors, used in the system.
