The system modules or the modules to which the system can be connected for obtaining information or requesting services are different. The CONNECT is equipped with a CD ROM player that is able to read and manage CD ROMs and audio CDs. The audio supports may be regular commercial audio CDs or CD ROMs containing files in MP3 format (all levels) and an external CD Changer can be operated or an analogue audio output accepted. The system is also equipped with a GSM Dual Band module and micro format SIM Card reader (that allows the user the insert a SIM Card). There is an external microphone (hands-free and voice recognition usage).769 In this mode, the SETUP and TRIP modules can be activated but it is not possible to validate any parameter change, language change or measurement unit change or any other type of adjustment envisaged by the CONNECT system. These limitations are normal when the system is activated by means of the ON button. When the vehicle is not running (key OFF), the data transmission devices inside the vehicle are not operational. When ignition key is turned ON, the system begins to work.769 With the ignition key OFF, the system deactivates with a delay of 20 minutes if a system destination has been set or if a phone conversation is in progress. When the Off mode is activated, the CONNECT system may be turned off by turning the ignition key to the OFF position. The Connect (NIT) includes an ANTITHEFT function that prevents it operating in the case of theft. The NIT is installed during producition and connnected to the CAN network in order to establish communication with the Body Computer and store an antitheft code known as the Exchange Code.At each subsequent Key On (and even if the battery is disconnected), an automatic authentication procedure is repeated: if the outcome of the Exchange Code check is positive, the system starts working, whilst if the codes compared are not the same, a message appears on the display and on the actual radio Code Card767 The Master Code is pre-programmed in production and different for each NIT. It is also different from the Exchange Code.768 The procedure for entering the Master Code manually is only necessary if the Body Computer is replaced or a NIT already used on another vehicle with a CAN is installed.768 A new NIT (never installed on other vehicles) may be fitted using an automatic authentication procedure without manual input of the Master Code. The phone module allows normal phone activity, text messages, support for Service Calls to the Provider (described in the relevant chapter) and Internet access by means of WAP (Wireless Access Protocol) and can be partly managed using the controls on the steering wheel. The CONNECT module sends various information to the control panel via the CAN network on phone section operating status. The navigation system allows you to reach a destination set by the user by giving visual and acoustic instructions. The navigation module built into the NIT receives data on progress (forward motion and reverse) and direction changes from information made available on the CAN network by the NBC. It cross-checks this with information received from GPS satellites by means of the GPS aerial on the car roof to calculate the Estimated Car Point (car location).767 The navigation module does not contain a gyroscope because if no signals are received from the satelllites, the Navigation system recognises the car''s motion using vehicle motion information received from the CAN network. Upon initial activation and each time the battery is disconnected, the GPS takes about 15 minutes to activate. The navigation system takes about 100km to self-regulate accurately from the first system start-up and when the tyres are changed. If the engine is turned off and the vehicle is moved with the system off (e.g. on a pick-up truck), at the next key-on, the GPS system will take a few minutes to determine the car''s new position. The navigation CD-ROM drive is located on the front of the Connect system and is the same as used for audio CDs.It is not therefore possible to use the audio player and the navigation drive simultaneously: The navigation system can, however, work partly even without the navigation CD-ROM inserted. The main function of the Navigation module is called Route Guidance. This is responsible for extracting, managing and processing the information required to guide the user to the set destination. With the key ON, the Connect and Navigation system mobile are activated. A message appears reminding the customer that the navigation system is a tool that can help guide through traffic but the reponsibility always lies with the driver and the highway code must be respected at all times. When the control knob is pressed, the vehicle is the vehicle is located by the satellites and then the vehicle position co-ordinates are displayed as shown in the figure below. The Trip Computer module integral with the Connect manages and calculates a lot of information that can then be displayed on screen to supply a set of useful data on the route followed by the user. Some information comes directly from the Navigation module, others comes from the various vehicle Nodes. For this reason, the Trip computer is fully operational only when the the ignition is ON and the network wakes up and can carry information required by the Trip Computer.
