Dodge Monaco ES 1990 - 1990 ENGINE PERFORMANCE Self-Diagnostics - 3.0L
Dodge Monaco ES 1990 - INTRODUCTION
If no faults were found while performing BASIC TESTING , proceed with SYSTEM DIAGNOSIS. If no fault codes are present during testing, proceed to H - TESTING W/O CODES article for diagnosis by symptom (i.e. ROUGH IDLE, NO START, etc.).
Dodge Monaco ES 1990 - SYSTEM DIAGNOSIS
The engine control system on Monaco and Premier does not have a check engine light, store fault codes or have self-diagnostic capability. The ECU is programmed to monitor several different engine control system circuits. If a problem is sensed with a monitored circuit during SYSTEM TESTS using DRB-II, the tester will display a fault code. See FAULT CODE IDENTIFICATION table. However, Keep Alive Memory (KAM) faults are displayed for the O2 sensor, MAP sensor, throttle position sensor, air temperature sensor, and coolant temperature sensor. See KAM under DIAGNOSING WITH DRB-II & JEEP/EAGLE ADAPTER in this article.
A specific fault code results from a particular system failure. The component in that system is not necessarily the reason for the failure. The code indicates a possible malfunction area, it does not condemn the component itself.
Dodge Monaco ES 1990 - DIAGNOSING WITH DRB-II & ADAPTER
Diagnostic connectors "D1" and "D2" are located on right front fender panel. See Fig. 1 . With DRB-II and Jeep/Eagle adapter connected to diagnostic connectors "D1" and "D2," all character positions will illuminate and copyright information will appear on screen for a few seconds. If DRB-II screen is blank, refer to DRB-II PROBLEMS & ERROR MESSAGES in this article. The DRB-II will offer 4 menus: Dodge Monaco ES 1990 - Component Locations - VEHICLES TESTED, HOW TO USE, CONFIGURE and SELECT VEHICLE.
Fig. 1: Dodge Monaco ES 1990 - Component Locations - Location of Diagnostic Connectors "D1" & "D2"

Press "1" key or ENTER key when VEHICLES TESTED appears on DRB-II. DRB-II shows models covered by cartridge. Screen will display for 5 seconds and return to DRB-II menu. To return to DRB-II menu sooner, press ATM key.
Dodge Monaco ES 1990 - CONFIGURE
Press "3" key or ENTER key when CONFIGURE appears on DRB-II. Configure allows user to customize DRB-II display. For example, if metric system is more useful, select METRIC from the menu. All selections in CONFIGURE option remain active until user changes selection.
Dodge Monaco ES 1990 - SELECT VEHICLE
- This allows the user to enter information about vehicle being tested. Usually, this option has more than one display screen. Use ENTER key to enter vehicle information. When entering TRANS TYPE, enter AUTO ZF TRANS.
- When all information about vehicle is entered, DRB-II will display an information summary the technician has entered. DRB-II will show an additional option marked CONFIRM. If information is correct, press CONFIRM. DRB-II will display MAIN MENU.
Dodge Monaco ES 1990 - MAIN MENU
The MAIN MENU presents all diagnostic functions available. Functions are SYSTEM TESTS, READ FAULTS, STATE DISPLAYS, ACTUATOR TESTS and ADJUSTMENTS. READ FAULTS and ACTUATOR TESTS are NOT available.
CAUTION: Keep Alive Memory (KAM) will be ERASED if SYSTEM TESTS are performed before checking KAM faults.
Dodge Monaco ES 1990 - SYSTEM TESTS
- This is an interactive functional test of a particular system. During testing, DRB-II provides instructions to technician. After task is performed, press ENTER key. A fault will be generated since technician has performed a requested action and tester had not seen any indication from diagnostic pins.
- Some tests, such as engine coolant temperature sensor, require longer periods before circuit is automatically faulted (depending on ambient temperature). If after performing SYSTEM TESTS, DRB-II is unable to detect a fault, NO FAULTS DETECTED will display.
- An alpha character may appear as a fault code prefix. The character displayed can indicate where fault was detected in the engine test sequence. Alpha prefixes display only during SYSTEM TESTS.
- "A" (First Key Off) - Ignition switch in OFF position.
- "B" (Key On Before Fuel Pump Drops Out) - Ignition in ON position. FUEL PUMP DROPS OUT refers ECU activating fuel pump relay and fuel pump. If the ECU does NOT detect a crank signal within seconds after ignition is turned on, it will automatically open ground circuit to fuel pump relay, disabling fuel pump.
- "C" (Key On After Fuel Pump Drops Out) - Ignition is in ON position after fuel pump relay has timed out (fuel pump off).
- "D" (First Crank) - The engine is cranking but not running.
- "E" (First Engine Start) - Engine idling.
- "F" (Second Key Off Before Fuel Pump Drops Out) - Ignition is in OFF position for the second time before fuel pump relay has timed out.
- "G" (Second Key Off After Fuel Pump Drops Out) - Ignition in OFF position for second time before fuel pump relay times out.
- "H" - Second Key On.
- "I" - Second Engine Start.
- "J" - Last Key Off.
- "X" (ECU Defined Faults) - Faults detected by ECU on-board diagnostics.
Dodge Monaco ES 1990 - STATE DISPLAYS
- This allows technician to view conditions at signal level. The 2 types of signals are analog and digital. Analog signals are monitored at pins corresponding to vehicle harness splices (e.g. fuel pump relay). Digital signals correspond to data transmitted by system controllers. Both signals are displayed in common units (e.g. temperature), this information is not relative to diagnostic intent.
- Use up and down arrow keys on DRB-II to scroll through displays. Select STATE DISPLAYS or ENGINE. If ENGINE state display is selected, technician has the option to view either static state display or MIN/CURRENT/MAX value display.
- The STATIC display shows current conditions as they exist. The MIN/CURRENT/MAX display shows a history of specific sensor conditions. Maximum, current (static) and minimum values can be displayed for a specific sensor. To reset sensors or zero value, simply press ENTER key. This display can isolate intermittent faults.
- The following ENGINE state displays are available on the DRB-II.
- Vehicle Program and Calibration Code - Program numbers (PGM) indicate ECU is programmed for a specific engine. Calibration code (CAL) applies to manual or automatic transmission.
- Battery - Displays battery voltage.
- H 2 O - Engine coolant temperature is displayed in degrees Fahrenheit or Celsius.
- Air - Air temperature is displayed in degrees Fahrenheit and Celsius.
- TPS - Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) is displayed as WIDE OPEN, CLOSED or PARTIAL and percentage of opening from closed throttle to Wide Open Throttle (WOT).
- A/C Status - If any A/C signals are active, an abbreviated display will show: Select SEL, Predict PRE, Clutch CL and Cut-Out CO. If A/C signals are inactive, A/C OFF will be displayed.
- Relay Status - Displays EGR solenoid, B+ latch relay and fuel pump relay as on "+" or off "0". When EGR solenoid is off, vacuum is present. When EGR solenoid is on, vacuum is absent.
- Barometric Pressure Reading - Barometric pressure value can be used to test MAP sensor. A good MAP sensor will read within .60 in. Hg of current barometric pressure at sea level. Subtract .1 in. Hg for every 100 feet above sea level. Call weather bureau for current barometric pressure.
- RPM - Engine speed is displayed.
- Exhaust Oxygen Sensor - Displays voltage from O2 sensor and whether fuel system is "RICH" or "LEAN". Displays if system is in "DECEL" condition or "OPEN LOOP".
- Pulse Width - Displays the amount of time in milliseconds that the fuel injector is open.
- ALFACL - The closed loop pulse width correction factor is displayed in units from 0-255. ALFACL represents the correction used to calculate injector pulse width in response to oxygen sensor input. If oxygen sensor reads rich, ALFACL will decrease. If oxygen sensor reads lean, ALFACL will increase.
- CTAVE - This is average closed throttle value displayed as a percentage of full scale. The closed throttle switch provides a signal to the ECU to indicate throttle status.
- KAM - Keep Alive Memory (KAM) faults are displayed for the O2 sensor, MAP sensor, TPS, air temperature sensor and coolant temperature sensor. Next to sensor display, a pair of numbers is displayed. Each number reflects a period since ECU detected a fault. The first number corresponds to a sensed Low condition failure. The second number corresponds to a sensed High condition failure. When ECU detects a Low or High condition failure, then number 15 will be stored for the respective sensor. If the engine is started and closed loop is attempted and fault is no longer present, the counter will be decreased by one. If the fault is still present, counter will remain at 15. Values of "0" (zero) indicate a Low or High fault condition does not exist for sensor displayed. Values of 0-15 indicate the ECU has detected a fault at some time, but fault is not currently present (possible intermittent).
- The MIN/CURRENT/MAX display allows technician to observe operation of 6 different sensor values. Information is displayed as a 3-digit number. The first value is minimum reading, second number is current reading and third value is maximum reading. The monitored sensors are: MAP sensor, O2 sensor, Throttle Position Sensor (TPS), Coolant Temperature Sensor (CTS), Manifold Air Temperature (MAT) sensor and CTAVG (average learned closed throttle value).
- Typically sensors range between 2-252. Values less than 2 or greater than 252 will usually indicate a sensor is shorted or disconnected. Watch minimum and maximum values to help diagnose intermittent problems.
- The CUSTOM DISPLAY allows the user to program up to 2 screens, which can consist of STATE DISPLAYS MIN/CURRENT/MAX or SENSORS.
Dodge Monaco ES 1990 - ADJUSTMENTS
The "Adjustments" option provides TPS adjustment or erasing stored information in system controller. Follow DRB-II instructions to accomplish desired task.

Dodge Monaco ES 1990 - FAULT 1223: NO ECU TESTS RUN
The ECU controlling Monaco & Premier 3.0L engines, provides limited on-board diagnostics. ECU based tests are performed with key ON. Check for short circuit to source and ground. Check for open circuits to fuel injectors, A/C relay "B+" power latch relay, EGR solenoid, and ignition control module.
Tests will not run if injector supply voltage (supplied through fuel pump) is low after one tenth of a second from key ON or engine crank is sensed within that tenth of a second.
Dodge Monaco ES 1990 - CRANK SENSED
Retesting with key ON only and ensuring operator DOES NOT crank engine will eliminate this possibility.
Dodge Monaco ES 1990 - INJECTOR LOW VOLTAGE
This usually caused by a slow fuel pump relay (low battery voltage should be checked prior to ECU test). Trying another relay will eliminate this possibility.
NOTE: This fault does not imply there is malfunction with the system. It simply implies that a small part of diagnostic test was not run.
